Hi Oom & Tannie,

25 years younger is not an excuse! In Khartoum a couple in their 70s arrived in an Iveco truck kitted out with awesome stuff - just the gear is enough of a reason to do these trips!

Your names have popped up in conversation throughout Ethiopia - we are currently overlooking Lake Tana. Fish Eagle, Pelicans, Kingfisher, Cormorant, Darter and Hoepoo just sitting here. We have also seen plenty of birds you can only get over here. Mecca of bird watching!

Hi Somple,

It was good meeting you and doing the boat trip. We haven't forgotten to send you photographs, we just haven't had any Internet connection. I'll get them over to you as soon as I can.

Hi there,
I've been following your blog for sometimes now, holding my breath on how you'll perceive Sudan and Sudanese people.
Just want to assure you that it's a very safe country and the people are amazingly friendly, helpful and very welcoming towards foreigners and tourists, the poorest person would insist on inviting you to a cup of tea or lunch at his house, that's a normal thing.
When you cross the borders to Sudan the hounding for money stops, if I got a flat tire in Sudan I just pull over on the side of the road and somebody will stop to change my tireb without having to wave to anybody. Most people get offended if I offer them some money for the help.
Having lived in Europe for many years of my life I don't recall anybody perceive Sudan as a dangerous country, but they always thought that we live in a jungle with monkeys as pets. The man was very candid with you as we think of South Africa as an extremely dangerous place filled with muggers, aids and gun shots flying on the air and if you were lucky you will get away with only a mysterious fever and a stomach disease. Please don't be offended by this, I'm just trying to say that we all have some missconceptions about the others, the best thing is that you don't have to listen to anybody and find out yourselves.
I wish you all the best, have a safe trip, and oh be careful with alcohol, I'm not sure if it's available for tourists or not, better ask first and don't try to smuggle from Egypt.
Waiting for your next blog, be kind though, ha ha

Haha guys great post. That MacDonalds is different from all the other MacDonalds in the world so going there is no embarassment; every overlander needs an icecream with strawberry syrup while waiting around in Aswan...hope you had a good time on the ferry, would be great to see pics. We were lucky and it was not hot or crowded, but I suspect you might not be so lucky...next step is waiting around in Wadi Halfa as the barge gets delayed and the engine breaks and before you know it the promised tuesday or whatever turns into thursday turns into saturday except wait its closed so its actually going to be next monday...I think you'll love Sudan, great for a bit of quiet time in the desert. Was just reading on the FCO website to be careful in Khartoum because of increased risk of kidnappings. Wasn't an issue when we were there. Hope you guys are well, Mary & Brett
